I hate the ‘I love you more than me’ narrative, although I’ll say it’s very human and I’d not be surprised if they really did get divorced, if they stayed in the real world.
i think it’s very human and if they weren’t portrayed as true love…
I think, the way I think about it, is that Amy’s head is v. complicated, and it’s been re-written a lot. She was obsessed with the doctor, thought of rory as gay / her brother (VampinVenice) — and then the universe rebooted, from what was in her head, and it was what she wanted it to be, and what she thought it should be, and that, in some weird fucked up way, explains this.
She recreated this. She gave herself back her mum and dad, she rewrote those twelve years back into existence. She said what happened. And she REMEMBERS them. How much of Rory is Rory, and how much of Rory is what Amy said was Rory? “He loves me more than I love him, do I love him enough,” was a pretty reoccuring theme in Amy’s mind in S5, and if she rebuilt the universe with that as truth… it could explain why she thinks of it as this true love.
… And that theory, while it suddenly makes so much sense, is incredibly depressing, and is one of the reasons I like S5 Amy the best and I do ship her and the Doctor. I think that without the Doctor in her life, she and Rory would have been aces, but I feel like now, it’s settling and neither of them is going to be happy when you get down to brass tacks.
